Jeff and Monica Fife
Jefferson Davis Fife was born in Brazil, December 23, 1965, son of Tom and Libby Fife. Monica Mnahas Nascente was born in Brazil, October 13, 1969, daughter of Odelmo Manhas Nascente and Elzi Manhas Nascente. Jeff and Monica were married in Brazil, January 7, 1989. Their first son, Roger Manhas Fife, was born in Brazil, April 30, 1993. Their second son, Isaac Manhas Fife, was born in Salem, MA, June 16, 1997.
Jeff grew up in a family of missionaries, being literally raised in the Brazilian Church of Christ (Christian). By 1980, he was playing lead guitar in the Shalom Gospel Group. He first came to the United States in September 1981 with his parents, one of his three brothers and one of his two sisters. During the following year, the five of them traveled the country visiting churches, raising funds, and receiving donations of instruments to start the Hallelujah Gospel Group in Brazil. From 1982 to 1984, Jeff worked with this muscial group as well as with Agape Ministries. In 1984, he was drafted and served one year in the Brazilian Army.
In 1985, Jeff came to the United States to do a one-year course of sound engineering and radio broadcasting at the Christian Voice of Central Ohio (WCVO and WCVZ radio stations). This course of study was a gift of Paul "Pat" Patterson, president of the enterprise at that time. Returning to Brazil in 1986, Jeff worked as a program director for Radio Universal, a Christian station in Goiania
In 1988, Jeff was invited by his future father-in-law, Odelmo Manhas Nascente, a Brazilian pastor, to work in Sao Paulo with the evangelist Mission (AME-TO LOVE) Gospel group. Subsequently, in 1992, Jeff and his father-in-law started, with six members, a church called Community of Christ in Sao Paulo. Jeff who studied theological education by extension (TEE) with his father, Tom Fife, was set apart as elder by the congregation in Sao Paulo. Later, on September 17, 1994, when Jeff and Monica felt called to work in the United States, the Community of Christ congregation in Sao Paulo had nearly two hundred members and was finishing construction of a building.
The intention of Jeff and Monica was to return to work in Ohio, but God had other plans for them. In southern New England alone there are close to one-half Brazilians and other Portuguese speakers. By June 1994, Jeff and Monica were starting a new congregation in [[Peabody, Massachusetts] (on the north shore of the Boston metropolitan area). In the Peabody area, there are more than 10,000 Brazilians and other Portuguese-speaking individuals, and at that time there was no Portuguese-language church.
God has been very gracious to us and has used us for His honor and glory throughout our lives, as individuals and as a family. The work in the Portuguese-Speaking world it is a blessing, especially in the location where we have been working in Brazil. God has helped us to disciple and train new Christians to work in His Kingdom, and at present we are able to coordinate the work from a distance, as we have done with the work in Mozambique and have aided the work in Angola, Guinea Bissau and Portugal. Mostly our work is in assisting with discipleship material, short term mission trips, advice and raising funds to do the work. The men in Brazil have caught the vision and are planning to plant 15 more churches in the next 10 years. We have men ready to lead the churches, to continue with the Bible College, preparing new ministers for the new churches that will be planted in the future.
As I pursue studies at Emmanuel, my wife Monica is studying at Milligan College; we are seeking more knowledge to better serve our Lord and His Kingdom more efficiently. We continue to coordinate (Brazil River of Life Ministries). Our work consists in writing weekly discipleship material, one article for the monthly journal (these materials are used in churches throughout the Portuguese-Speaking World - more than 600 churches receive and use this material), a monthly leadership meeting by Skype, give advice when needed by e-mail or phone, make an annual mission trip (at least two months in length) to Brazil, visit churches in the USA, raise funds as much as possible for the work to continue in the Portuguese-Speaking world, and function as executive director for the ministry in the USA.
